It could have been a lot worse, but no one was hurt yesterday morning when a speeding Police car, with sirens blaring, had to avoid a refrigerated truck that made a sudden turn off Woodlands Road toward Tumkins Lane.

The driver of the truck tried to avoid a collision by turning back onto Woodlands Road while the Police car swerved toward Tumkins Lane, only to have to manoeuvre again to avoid crashing headlong into a station wagon, witnesses said.

In the end, the Police car crashed into a wall, ripping off parts of the station wagon and the truck came to a stop on the side of the wall.

The car's driver, who did not give his name, said the truck driver signalled for him to come out of Tumkins Lane onto the main artery, but he declined because of the oncoming Police car.

Apparently, said the car's driver, the truck driver was not aware of the Police car behind him, and proceeded to turn onto Tumkins Lane himself.

Other witnesses said the truck driver had his windows up and most likely had the air-conditioning on and would not have heard the Police car's sirens.

A fire truck attended the scene with Police and the driver of the car was later taken away by ambulance to the King Edward Memorial Hospital.

He did not appear to have any discernible injuries, but he was put in a neck brace after he told medics of a prior neck condition.
