Probe into visitor's death continuing
An online news article claimed yesterday that CBS news? 48 hours investigates was interested in coming to Bermuda to investigate the apparent suicide of an American businessman.
Cayman Net News said the major media interest had spurred the Bermuda Police Service to send Officers to the US to talk to the parents of Dimitri Pappas who was found dead at the Brightside Apartments in Flatts on July 20.
The online newspaper said yesterday that despite an apparent suicide, Police were ?discussing other theories? about Mr. Pappas? death.
The organisation has quoted the late accountant?s parents who are calling for further investigation and said their son would not kill himself.
However, Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said yesterday the story on Cayman net news was ?very much not the total of the truth?.
?We have not changed anything,? Mr. Caines said. ?We are in the advanced stages of the investigation and we have senior officers carrying out an investigation.?
On August 19, Police said in a release: ?An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of 37-year-old Peter Pappas is nearing completion.
?The file when completed will be forwarded to the Coroner who will decide whether or not an inquest will be held. Mr. Pappas was discovered deceased in his hotel room in Smith?s Parish on Wednesday, July 20, 2005. Police and Forensic Support personnel attended the scene following which Mr. Pappas was taken to the morgue at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where an autopsy was subsequently conducted and we are now in possession of the pathology report.
?The report does not indicate that foul play was a contributing factor in the death. The cause of death is anticipated to be determined by the Coroner by way of an inquest,? it said.
The Cayman net news article quoted Mr. Pappas? mother to say: ?They made us know the case is not closed. They asked us about Dimitri?s childhood and his career. They asked us about our theories surrounding his death.
She also was quoted to say officers of the Bermuda Police Service had questioned ?one of Dmitri?s female associates who was with her son very late on the night of July 19,? it said. ?They know that Dmitri?s parents have deep pockets and will not stop with the course of the investigation,? the net news story said.
