Public advised to check voters list

Hundreds of people rushed the Office of the Parliamentary Registrar to register to vote in the July 24 election in time for the end of business Thursday deadline.

An updated voters list must be published by next Thursday and the public is being asked to check that list and bring any discrepancies to the attention of the Parliamentary Registry within the next seven days.

"It's been absolutely chaos," said Parliamentary Registrar Sabrina Phillips. "I'm really disappointed that so many people waited until the last minute particularly since we made all this effort to encourage people to come in earlier."

She said about 1,100 submissions were received online and about 1,000 people came into her offices during the last week.

But it was too early to say how many applications were mailed in.

Roughly 200 to 300 of the applications were first-time voters, she said.
