About 800 people showed up for a Progressive Labour Party (PLP) rally at Warriors Field, Devils Hole yesterday evening.

Candidates for the East End of the Island were paraded on stage to give two minute speeches urging their followers to keep the faith and help re-elect the PLP.

"Don't ever get off the PLP ship of life," said Rev Larry Lowe. "You may get angry but don't get off."

He said that the party, like any family had its squabbles but it was together.

And, like a number of other candidates at the rally, he mocked their political opponents the United Bermuda Party.

"The only thing new about the United Bermuda Party is that they are trying new tricks. They talk about being multicultural and multiracial and multigenerational. Well the PLP has been that for a long, long time. They may be multi this and multi that, but they are still unilaterally colonialistic minded," he said.

"Yes they put some new windows on their building, they put some new paint on their building but guess what, the foundation is still the same. A leopard can't change his spots. There is no new United Bermuda Party. It's the same old party but just dressed up in a different way."

Labour leader Derrick Burgess told the crowd that they shouldn't be fooled by promises of affordable housing being offered by the UBP.

"You're not going to get a king size bed in that house... It's less than 1000 square feet per house," he said.

"Bermuda's not growing, as far as land mass... What's the sense of putting up a little shoe box for our people ?"

He said: "This PLP Government, which is a good government... is going to build decent houses so you can relax when you come home and can stretch your legs out. That's what we're going to do."

Tourism Minister Renee Webb told the crowd that another PLP government will do even better than during its first term.

She said the government was not perfect but had done the best it can. "We do not serve ourselves, we serve the people of this country and I am proud to be associated with the PLP and the Progressive Labour Party Government," she added.

"Do you really believe that Grant Gibbons living in Tuckers Town can relate to you who live in Middletown and Dandy Town ? There is no way that he can relate to you and me. He does not know the struggles of our people. He does not know why we are where we are and why we will stay where we are. We will ensure that Bermuda and Bermudians are represented at the helm of the Government in this country. The days of being represented by people who do not serve our interests are over."
