The Bermuda Red Cross Haiti appeal has raised $5,285 since it started last Friday, said director Ann Spencer-Arscott.

And the Salvation Army has so far raised about $100,000 to help Grenada and Jamaica which were devastated by Hurricane Ivan earlier this month.

Haiti was battered by Tropical Storm Jeanne ? now a hurricane ? which led to massive flooding and landslides in northern parts of the country. Hundreds were killed and thousands left homeless.

Deforestation was blamed for the severity of the flooding.

The Bermuda Red Cross said that there was an urgent need for food, drinking water, blankets, and plastic sheeting.

And it is asking the public to either mail cheques to its headquarters on 9 Berry Hill Road, Paget, or drop by the office with debit/credit cards. It also accepts debit/credit card numbers over the phone. Cheques should be made out to Haiti Floods.

All money received will be sent to the International Federation for distribution to the Haiti Red Cross.

Ms Spencer-Arscott added that the Hurricane Ivan appeal had raised well over $130,000 ? $50,000 of it from the Bermuda Government.

Two of the many donors were Saltus Grammar School, who contributed over $3,700 from their recent grub day, and the Filipino Association which chipped in with $500.

Hurricane Ivan ripped through several islands causing 70 deaths and billions of dollars damage.

Major Clarence Ingram, of the Salvation Army, said last night that two container loads of mostly clothing and some food would be leaving at the end of this week en route to Grenada.

After the two containers has left, Major Ingram said the Salvation Army intended to send more.

Last Saturday a Boeing 747 plane took 44,000 pounds of food, water, and emergency supplies to Jamaica and Grenada.
