Fewer than ten female recruits signed up in the Bermuda Regiment's drive to recruit women.

But Bermuda Regiment Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Edward Lamb said a new drive would start after the Regiment returned from its annual two-week camp in Jamaica, where soldiers are carrying out military exercises and community service.

"We will revisit the campaign on our return," said Lt. Col. Lamb. "We are planning for the camp to still begin in May with the new recruits."

He said the Regiment will announce a new enlistment date for both women and men who are interested in joining.

Bermuda Regiment spokesman Capt. Wayne Smith said the new soldiers will serve a full term of three years and two months and will be put through their paces.

He added: "The Regiment has always recruited women, but they hadn't for a couple of years and it has decided to renew its efforts.

"The response has been fair and we are still encouraging others to sign up for the May recruit camp."
