Regulations allowing larger vehicles came into effect yesterday allowing bigger private cars, light trucks and intermediate trucks. A new, larger, size category known as Class H was added to the legislation but the public will still be able to purchase a Class A car (the smallest class of vehicle) through Class G car should they wish.

The Motor Car Act 1951 has only been amended to add the larger class vehicle.

The new licence fee for the new Class H private car is $1,365.10 per year.

The maximum length of private cars and light trucks has increased six inches and the maximum width by four inches.

The Transport Control Department said the new specifications for private cars are:

Maximum length = 175 inches

Maximum width = 71 inches

Maximum engine capacity = 2,500 cc

Power to weight ratio cannot be less than 10.5 kilograms per kilowatt.

Additionally, TCD advised the new specifications for light trucks and private light trucks are:

Maximum length = 175 inches

Maximum width = 71 inches

Maximum Gross vehicle weight = 7,000 lbs.

The new specifications for intermediate trucks are:

Maximum length = 190 inches

Maximum width = 74 inches

Maximum Gross vehicle weight = 12,000 lbs.

Transport Control director Kevin Monkman said: "If a person owns a heavy truck which they believe will fit into the new intermediate category, they are requested to contact the Senior Examiner to make arrangements to have the truck measured.

"If the truck does fit into the smaller category, the truck will be licensed in that category at the next licensing period. This also applies to owners who have intermediate trucks which they believe will fit into the new light truck category."
