Report: Police launch fraud probe

An officer in the Accountant General's office is under Police investigation for fraud, according to unofficial reports.

Police would neither officially confirm nor deny the reports but The Royal Gazette understands that a scheme to defraud Government coffers was uncovered while the officer in question was on vacation.

Yesterday unofficial Police sources confirmed that an officer in the Accountant General's office was the subject of an investigation involving fraud.

The alleged scheme involved filing false claims under the Government Employees Health Insurance programme.

An estimated $200,000 is alleged to have been stolen.

Calls to the Accountant General's office seeking clarification of the matter were referred to Financial Secretary Donald Scott who did not return calls by Press time yesterday.
