Nelson Bascome III must serve his time with Regiment despite defying orders during the first day of Training Camp and appealing to the Governor in a bid to escape his duties.

At Press time last night Private Bascome had not yet been officially informed of the decision, and was still being held in the Regiment Guard.

The Governor made his decision on the matter yesterday after Pvt. Bascome spent two days in the brig waiting for word on whether his request to have the exemptions tribunal?s decision overturned.

Last night, Capt. Wayne Caines, Second-in-Command of Training Company said: ?The Governor has upheld the decision of the exemptions tribunal. He (Pvt. Bascome) is not exempt from his duties and must commence his Regimental duties immediately.?

Whether or not Pvt. Bascome will be released from the Regiment Guard will depend on his reaction to the news, was told.

Pvt. Bascome refused to comply with Regiment orders after showing up for the first day of Training Camp on Sunday.

He had previously been before the Exemptions Tribunal who refused his request to stave off the three year, two month military stint.

?As of this time and this letter he has to put on his uniform and start serving,? Capt. Caines said.

If Pvt. Bascome does not comply he will be facing standard military disciplinary action. He may have to appear before a Magistrate if he continues to refuse to serve.

Capt. Caines said last night recruit camp was ?like a beehive?. Recruits were going through the competitions, including a football competition and a tug-of-war, while Regiment Police practised for the funeral of Finance Minister Eugene Cox, to be held on Saturday.

During the week the Regimental Police has been out looking for recruits who did not turn up on Sunday morning for the start of training. They will continue to pick up men throughout the week, Capt. Caines said.

Currently, there are 113 men are now in attendance at Warwick Camp for the two-week recruit camp.
