Bermuda would not have to shoulder any burdens if Caricom decides to take action to help out beleaguered Haiti, Premier Alex Scott said last night.

Caribbean Community leaders were meeting in Jamaica last night to discuss a regional response to the coup d?etat in Haiti.

Bermuda is an associate member of Caricom, but as a colony, any decision about foreign policy matters would need to be taken by Britain, said Mr. Scott.

And in any case, the Island would not be landed with any commitments to the impoverished Caribbean nation following the ousting of Jean-Bertrand Aristide, he added.

?It would not have any implications for us one way or the other,? said Mr. Scott last night.

Deputy Governor Nick Carter said last night he was not aware of possible responsibilities for Bermuda arising out of the Island?s associate membership of Caricom.

Caricom leaders from Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana, Barbados, the Bahamas, St. Lucia and Dominica were meeting last night in Kingston, Jamaica to discuss the Haitian crisis.

Before the meeting, Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Patrick Manning said throwing Haiti out of Caricom because of the coup d?etat had not been ruled out.
