Two men who let their `fingers do the walking' were charged in Magistrates' Court yesterday with shoplifting goods from The Shopping Centre.

Terry Donald Davis, 39, of Shelly Bay appeared to answer a charge of stealing on Monday.

Crown counsel Graveney Bannister was aided by Koshea Scott who told the court the facts of the offences before Magistrate Will Francis.

Ms Scott said that the manager of the store spotted Davis as he picked up a piece of cake and then slid it into the knapsack he was carrying.

The manager then observed Davis turn his head towards the entrance of the store without paying for the cake. Davis was followed out of the store where he was confronted by the manager.

The manager searched his knapsack and discovered a number of other items in the bag along with the cake which totalled $9.13.

When asked by Police why he did it, Davis said: "Because I was hungry."

Davis was then taken to Hamilton Police Station where he admitted the offence.

Mr. Francis fined Davis $100.

In a separate incident Mathew Timothy Mills, 36, of Parson's Road also admitted stealing from the supermarket.

The court learned that on July 20, Mills was spotted as he entered The Shopping Centre. While inside he moved over to a check out counter where he picked up a brown bag.

He was then followed down the isle of the store where he picked up a $17 bottle of Vodka and slid it into the bag.

Mills walked over to the produce area where he picked up a slice of watermelon. He carried it with him to the counter where he paid for the watermelon but not for the bottle of Vodka.

As he left the store he was stopped by the store manager who asked him about the vodka.

Mr. Francis asked if he had anything to say to which Mills responded: "Your honour I apologise."

Mills was fined $250 for the theft.
