Governor Sir John Vereker will set sail from Rhode Island today as one of the least experienced competitors in the Newport-Bermuda race.

Nearly 160 boats will set sail at lunch-time today for the 635 mile oceancrossing in the 44th instalment of the historic race, with Sir John joining the 12-man crew of , a 46-foot vessel owned and skippered Colin Couper.

Sir John, whose experience is limited to sailing in the English Channel off the south coast of Britain, has never completed an ocean crossing, but was accepted by Mr. Couper after showing "willing, enthusiasm and a keenness to learn".

It is understood that Sir John had approached the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club to enquire whether he could take part in the biennial event, and it in turn approached Mr. Couper.

Mr. Couper, whose daughter Ashley won this year's Front Street Mile and is

still hopeful of running into an Olympic spot, was happy to take Sir John.

"Whenever I am doing a crossing or a delivery I do like to take someone with limited experience ? well as long as they know what a jib is," said Mr. Couper, who is competing for the ninth time in an event he first completed 40 years ago.

"I first started out when I was 17 and I am grateful for what I learned from more experienced sailors.

"You can pick up bits and pieces from books and videos but there is nothing like the real thing and I am always keen to help those who are relatively new to sailing.

"I think it will a very good experience for him, and for us."

Once on the boat, Sir John, so often the guest of honour at all manner of social functions, will act as a junior crew member, referred to only as "John" ? at his request.

"That is the best way of doing these things," added Mr. Couper.

"He is just one of the crew on the boat and that is how he wants to be treated. He is very attentive and keen to learn ? I think he will do well for us."

Sir John, who seemed slightly embarrassed when approached by on his boat moored at Long Wharf, Newport, Rhode Island.

"Well, what do you want me to say?" he said humbly. "I'm just another member of the crew hoping to complete the race."
