Skip that rush hour traffic by taking a walk to work
Perhaps some employees feel more of an urge to run away from work instead of running to work.
However that is just what the Department of Health is encouraging people to do on April 9 - the new official "Cycle, Run or Walk to Work Day".
Concerned about levels of health among all Island residents, the Department is encouraging businesses and individuals to participate in the event, even providing T-shirts and certificates for participants.
There will also be a prize draw, said Health Promotion Coordinator Dr. Leonard Gibbons.
"Those who find it impossible to cycle, run or walk to work can do options such as cycle, run or walk from work to home, travel to town on the ferry and walk to and from work, drive part of the way and walk the rest, or plan to walk or work out alone or in a group during lunchtime of that day," said the Department in a letter sent to businesses.
In fact, the Department will be holding a walk during lunch time on April 9 and providing directions to participants once the route is finalised with Police.
"Health is our most valuable asset," the letter continued. "Unfortunately, many people do not invest much in their health until they experience a serious health problem, such as heart attack or cancer.
"By adapting a healthy lifestyle, individuals can significantly reduce their risk for serious health problems, increase energy levels and prolong their lives.
"Further, the promotion of healthy lifestyle behaviours in work places around the world has resulted in benefits such as decreased absenteeism, increased productivity and significant decreases in health care claims."
This is the first time such an event has been put on by the Department, said Dr. Gibbons. And although the Department wants to see how it goes before committing to any more, he added: "I don't see any reason why we can't make it an annual event."
Those wanting to participate were asked to inform the Department by March 28. Forms can be picked up from the Department of Communications and Information on the ground floor at Global House for individuals or businesses, or those interested can call 239-3428 or 239-3492 or fax 236-3973.
