Sandys North candidate Corin Smith has called on Government to demolish the Mangrove Bay dock building and convert the area into a park.

?This is an easy solution; it?s not a hard one,? the Opposition candidate said.

?There are some other more difficult areas that need to be attended to, but this one is easy and can be done with no risk to the taxpayer but the Government has to get out of the way and make it happen.?

Residents have long complained that the area is being used for illicit purposes ? including drug dealing and prostitution.

Mr. Smith?s opponent, Michael Scott has said that he has secured funding from a neighbourhood business for a structural ?redesign? that would make it difficult for the activities to continue.

But said, Mr. Smith, Government had long been urged by the constituents to deal with the problem.

?It has become an eyesore and an illicit area for the community. It shouldn?t be here ? this is one of the most scenic spots in Somerset village and the constituency wants to see it being brought up to something that will be an asset not a liability,? he said.

?They?ve been hearing promises from the Government to do something and they haven?t done it yet.?

He added: ?It was somewhat misleading for the Premier and the candidate to say they have already come up with a solution ? the constituency has the solution and the political system hasn?t carried it out yet. So the constituents are prepared to contribute to funding it, designing it and making it work. But instead of the Government supporting it they have been getting in the way or not making it a priority.

?The solution is not to make politics out of people?s needs, but to just service it, make it happen. That?s the issue. And it?s not fair to the community at large to grandstand on other people?s ideas ? you?ve got to just do it. Right now there have been a lot of promises made for the community that haven?t been delivered by this Government. It?s just time to get out of the way, stop grandstanding and just do it.?
