Former Premier Jennifer Smith has vacated The Laurels, her official residence while she headed the Government.

Department of Communication and Information consultant Honey Adams confirmed that Ms Smith had moved out, but could not say when.

The former Premier's stay at The Laurels after she left office in July has been a source of controversy - with the Opposition saying she should quit the premises immediately and the Government contending that there was precedence for a three-month grace period.

Ms Smith was the first Premier of Bermuda to live in The Laurels, the Belvedere Road, Paget residence which was occupied by former Attorney General Elliott Mottley until he quit his job in 1998.

Premier Alex Scott has indicated in the past that he will be remaining at his Warwick residence.

The Works and Engineering Ministry could not say by press time last night what Government's plans for the residence were.
