The roles were reversed in Smith's North where PLP Senator Patrice Parris, a loser in 1998, unseated sitting MP Allan Marshall of the UBP.

Leading from the first quarter count, Ms Parris increased her lead at each stage and comfortably won by 123 votes as boundary changes, which saw the constituency encompass a large chunk of the former PLP stronghold Devonshire North, played a major factor.

Ms Parris, who missed part of the campaign because she was on her honeymoon, said the changes had "a resounding effect but I hope that part of who I am also contributed to their choice".

The former Junior Minister for Finance and Community Affairs and Sport said: "I felt the count reflected the response I had on the doorstep.

"I'd like to thank the constituents for their understanding because a lot of them didn't get a chance to see me but knew and had read enough about me to give me their vote.

"I'm committed to serving them and the PLP to the best of my ability and I'm thankful for their confidence in me."

Mr. Marshall admitted that he was always facing an uphill battle to hang on to the redrawn seat but stated: "It was a good victory for Patrice. Her troops did well getting the vote out and she should be very proud.

"My team worked hard but it was not to be. I wish the new MP well and I hope she serves the constituents of Smith's North well and, more importantly, the country well."

As for his own political future, Mr. Marshall, a former shadow minister of Development, Opportunity and Government Services, said: "It's time for me to reflect. I'm looking forward to spending more time with my family - as I am sure they are too!"
