Emergency services were called when a smoking flare washed up on a beach on South Shore Road, Smith's on Saturday.

Fire Service spokesman Lt. Dana Lovell said the Royal Navy flare was similar to one found on a Southampton beach earlier this month used by the US Navy.

They are dropped from aircraft and designed to react with water and illuminate the location of submarines and ships.

The three-foot high cylinder was found by a passerby at 8.a.m. on Saturday morning on the shore near Summerhaven.

Eight fire crew were dispatched but the cylinder was dealt with by the Police ordnance dispatch team.
