Solo sailor all at sea after mast snaps

A 40-foot sailboat bound for the Azores broke its mast 575 miles north east of Bermuda, leaving a solo sailor stranded.

Bermuda Harbour Radio reported last night that the one man crew of the sailboat Fantasy was awaiting pickup by the motor vessel Hudson. The Hudson is bound for the UK.

The Fantasy left Florida on April 30 and lost her mast on May 6. She activated a persistent emergency radio beacon signal yesterday.

A C-130 US Coast Guard aircraft was dispatched and was checking on the Fantasy every half hour until 11 p.m. last night. The crewman was not in need of medical attention.

The aircraft was scheduled to land in Bermuda at one this morning for fuel and crew rest until they return to Elizabeth City, North Carolina today.
