The son of former Health Minister Nelson Bascome yesterday pleaded guilty to importing cannabis in a diaper taped to his boxer shorts.

Lawyer Victoria Pearman, representing Nelson Coleridge Vernon Bascome Jr., asked for pre-sentencing reports and stated that her client had a drug habit.

The 23-year-old pleaded guilty to importation, but not guilty to being in possession of the controlled substance.

Crown counsel Cindy Clarke told the Supreme Court that the former university student was caught at Bermuda International Airport when he was returning to the Island from Philadelphia on December 18 last year.

Ms Clarke said Bascome had cleared Immigration, when he was searched by the Police.

The officers found a black taped package in his Louis Vuitton wallet and when it was opened it revealed a small Zip-lock bag containing 0.8 grams of marijuana.

After that officers removed his trousers and a pair of football shorts and they discovered a diaper taped onto the outside of boxer shorts.

Inside of the diaper was a vacuum sealed bag, which contained 226.8 grams of cannabis, which had a street value of $11,325.

Justice Archibald Warner ordered a Bermuda Assessment and Referral Clinic (BARC) report and other pre-sentencing reports and adjourned the matter until December 1.
