Organisers of tonight's Monster Truck rally are promising the three day show will change the face of entertainment in Bermuda.

Seven giant trucks, a massive car-eating Komodo dragon, and a team of motorcyclists will be racing and crashing over cars at Southside for the first event of its kind.

Organisers Blue Grass Management have built 4,000 seats at the site, put a steel fence around the perimeter to protect spectators, and laid out 1,000 yards of dirt for the jumps.

By the end of the spectacular, the monster trucks will have destroyed around 50 cars.

"It's excellent. We are building a stadium up here," said Michael E. Jones, chairman of Blue Grass Management, last night.

"This is going to change the way we view sporting events in Bermuda. We have a three-year contract and this is going to be an annual event."

Contingency plans are in place in case the weather threatens to spoil the show. Three performances are scheduled, and their times will be rearranged between tonight and Tuesday if the weather is bad. Any changes to times of the shows will be advertised extensively in the media.

A special polyurethane matt will be placed under the cars along with sand and dirt to prevent damage to the playing field.

The pitch will suffer as a result of the all the mayhem, but Blue Grass has promised to resurface it and return it the Department of Youth and Sports in better condition than it is now.

"There are a lot of dips and sinks in it and after we've finished, we are going to re-seed the site so it will be better than it is now," said Mr. Jones.

Director of Youth and Sports Anthony Robertson said: "There will be some damage but it will not be significant, but we have an agreement with the organisers that they will return the grounds in better condition than they are in just now.

"We will get an improved field following the event, so its a win-win situation and I'm very excited about it."

Tickets for the show are available from the marketplace for $35 or at the gate for $45. The show starts at 6 p.m.
