Finance Minister Eugene Cox is off the Island - presumably for medical treatment. But Government is keeping the matter private at Mr. Cox's request.

Premier Alex Scott confirmed this week that Mr. Cox is off the Island, but said he knew little else. Mr. Cox's daughter, Paula Cox, is acting as Finance Minister.

The news raises public concern about the veteran politician's health. In February, Mr. Cox was hospitalised and missed part of the Budget debates.

He was discharged after a week only to be re-admitted a month later.

He later revealed that he had been battling intestinal cancer which had affected his digestive system, but that his doctors had given him a clean bill of health.

"The Minister is dealing with this as a family matter. He understands and he appreciates that the public is interested in his health and he will make a statement as soon as he deems fit," said Government spokeswoman Beverle Lottimore, yesterday.
