Stamps mark Trafalgar bicentennial

The Bermuda Post Office is producing a new commemorative stamp marking the bicentennial anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

The Bermuda Philatelic Bureau has announced that the series of four stamps and an official first day cover highlighting HMS Victory and the Bermuda-built vessel HMS Pickle.

The collection continues the post office's efforts to portray all facets of Bermuda's heritage, culture and history.

The Battle of Trafalgar was a closely fought engagement and the casualties bear out the ferocity of the fighting. The British lost 449 men ? including Admiral Lord Nelson ? and 1,241 wounded and the French and Spanish fleets lost over 4,400 men with 2,500 wounded.

The next issue, "Bermuda Habits", will be published on August 18.
