Two Warwick Academy basketball teams will try to break the Guinness Book of World Record time for the longest game played.

The current record,set by Australians in 1998, is 24 hours. The students plan to beat this by two hours starting at 4 p.m. today at the Bermuda College gym.

In addition the school is expecting 200 to 300 walkers tomorrow for an eight-mile hike from Somerset to Warwick Academy.

Meanwhile Warwick Primary is expecting more than 500 walkers for a mini-walk from the Post Office to the school before a picnic for more than 1,000 people at the Academy kicking off a fun day from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Then the crowd will move to the gym to roar on the basketball players trying to break the world record.

The events are all in aid of the school's charity Random Acts of Kindness event to raise money for Big Brothers and Big Sisters who are guests of honour at Sunday's event.

The school hopes to raise $10,000 for the charity's college fund and to buy four new computers for its office.

Fuel prices rise

Gas prices jumped by 1.2 cents a litre and diesel prices went up by 0.2 cents per litre yesterday.

The latest rise means gas prices are now 15 percent higher than in December 2001.

The maximum retail price for gasoline will be 137.40 cents per litre while for diesel it will be 116 cents per litre.

However kerosene prices dropped by 0.2 cents per litre to a maximum of 91.5 cents a litre acting The Minister of Finance Randy Horton announced yesterday.

Check that cheque

Seniors are being warned by Government to be careful in how they tear off the advice slip from pension cheques.

The latest monthly cheques have been incorrectly folded meaning if they are torn on the fold important account information will be removed.

However the Accountant General's Department has arranged with both banks to honour all pension cheques after a few seniors experienced problems cashing them.

Around 3,500 cheques have been issued. Pensioners who have not yet cashed their cheques are asked to look carefully for the perforated line and separate the check from the advice slip accordingly.

Fort to close

Members of the public are being advised that Fort St. Catherine will be closed for minor repairs.

The fort is expected to be closed from next Monday and will reopen on March 24.

The Department of Parks apologises to visitors and residents for any inconvenience the closure of the fort may cause.
