A taxi driver who felt she received shoddy treatment from The Bermuda Telephone Company (BTC) has now been contacted by the company's vice president.

BTC manager of corporate communications Ona Fletcher said that the company had extended "its heartfelt compassion to Ms Khalida Muhammad".

Ms Muhammad had come to The Royal Gazette last week and complained that she had been poorly treated by BTC after one of their overhead cables fell on her taxi shattering the windscreen.

The accident took place last Thursday on Harrington Sound Road just near Tom Moore's Tavern and was caused as a passing truck pulled the wires down. At the time of the accident Ms Muhammad was taking a visiting couple to the airport.

She said that the incident had unnerved them and told how she felt a BTC worker on the scene had been "callous" and "almost rude".

According to Ms Muhammad when she asked the worker what she should do, he told her he would have to look into it and ask his manager. She said she asked if she could go to the company and at least get some plastic to cover the exposed windscreen, and was told by him: "There's no one at the telephone yard to get plastic for your car, so you're probably going to have to go `round to Gorhams to buy some to tape the window'."

The article ran in Monday's Royal Gazette. That article quoted a BTC spokesperson who was not in fact the official company spokesperson, Ms Fletcher. The person quoted refused to divulge their name but worked in the repairs section of the company.

In a statement yesterday from Ms Fletcher she sought to also clarify Ms Muhammad's contention that BTC had been " fixing one of it's poles" at the time of the incident.

"In fact, the BTC staff happened upon the scene only because they were driving in the same line of traffic on their way to a service appointment," she said. "BTC denies the suggestion that it was responsible for the incident."

Meanwhile Ms Fletcher said that repairs to the cable along Harrington Sound Road have been completed.
