A 16-year-old boy who while kicked another boy in the face shattering his cheekbone was given a conditional discharge of two years probation in Juvenile Court.

The attack was so severe that the victim had to undergo plastic surgery and have metal plates to hold the bone together.

The family of the defendant was ordered to also pay restitution to the victim's family as the boy is still receiving counselling and medical attention to repair his face.

The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had pleaded guilty on a previous occasion and appeared in court on Wednesday for sentencing.

In a victim impact statement, which was read out during Wednesday's hearing, the victim stated that he and his attacker still spoke, but were not on friendly terms.

The defendant apologised for his actions and said it would not happen again.

Magistrate Tyrone Chin said the injuries that the victim suffered will be with him for the rest of his life.

As part of the probation conditions the defendant was ordered to improve his grades, be randomly drug tested and must also write an apology to his victim. A curfew was set for Sunday to Thursdays between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. and on Saturdays between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., he must also agree to any counselling and anger management classes.

His case will be reviewed on April 23, when he will have to report cards from the Christmas and Easter Terms.
