Bermuda Industrial Union president Derrick Burgess is calling on the Island's youth to remember that Labour Day is not just another holiday - but a holiday for a good reason.

"It's about giving thanks to all of those who came before and made what we have today possible," said Mr. Burgess yesterday.

"I think that sometimes young people think that life was always this way, without realising what their grandparents and parents went through to make this life possible."

Mr. Burgess was speaking after plans for this year's Labour Day celebrations were unveiled. They include races, speeches and performances by local musicians next Monday.

The walking race begins at 8 a.m., the children's running race begins at 8.30 a.m. and at 9 a.m. the adults set off at marathon speed.

There will be a prize presentation at 10 a.m. on Union Square and the Labour Day March will begin at 11.30 a.m.

Speakers will include the Premier Alex Scott, US councillor Helen Diane Foster, politicians. and other community leaders.
