Former Director of Public Prosecutions, Khamisi Tokunbo, will be back working for Government - in some capacity - shortly.

Civil Service head, Stanley Oliver, told The Royal Gazette in response to an emailed query that Mr. Tokunbo whose contract as DPP was not renewed when it expired in March, was still on the Government payroll.

"Mr. Tokunbo is presently using up most of his earned vacation to ensure that when he returns to work he will not have a large number of vacation days due him," the email reads.

"The maximum number of days an officer can carry from year to year is 20 days and rather than lose the time he is off on vacation at present.

"I have been in contact with Mr. Tokunbo and I anticipate that he will return to work sometime in June.

"As head of the civil service I am satisfied that all officers in the service are treated in a consistent manner and I am also conscious of the taxpayers' expectation that finances must be effectively managed."

Mr. Tokunbo initiated - but later discontinued - legal action when Governor Sir John Vereker decided to advertise his job and not renew the three year contract.

It is understood that the contract specified that should it not be renewed he will continue in the civil service at a rate of pay not less than the $127,000 he received as DPP.

Mr. Tokunbo was Bermuda's first DPP after the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) decided to have a politically appointed Attorney General.

The Governor has appointed Sri Lankan lawyer Kulendra Ratneser acting DPP until a permanent replacement can be found.
