A 31-year-old self-confessed drug addict appeared in court yesterday charged in connection with three separate street thefts - two against tourists.

Paul Lemar Smith, of Scenic Heights, Southampton, is accused of two counts of unlawful wounding, two counts of stealing, and one of attempting to steal during an eight hour period over Sunday night and Monday morning last week.

Prosecuting counsel Shade Subair told Magistrates Court that two of the charges related to an attack on a 68-year-old visitor outside of the Fairmont Hamilton Princess on Pitts Bay Road on the Sunday night.

And she said two of the charges related to an attack on a security guard at the Newstead Hotel on Harbour Road, at about 6 a.m. the following morning.

And the count of attempting to steal is also related to an incident on Pitts Bay Road on the Sunday evening, within half an hour of the other one.

Mr. Smith, who is alleged to have stolen wallets containing cash, was remanded in custody, and ordered to reappear before the court on October 22.
