Tourists fined for drug possession

A magistrate ordered four people to pay a total of $3,000 in fines for simple possession of marijuana.

Three of them were tourists who arrived here on a cruise ship with small amounts of cannabis for their personal use.

Each was fined $500 and the fourth, Lloyd Burch of Woodlawn Road, Sandys had an additional $1,000 added on because he had the drugs in an Increased Penalty Zone.

Magistrates Court was told that Burch was arrested at the Somerset Recreation Club in late April and was found to be in possession of 0.59 grams of cannabis.

Amanda Laliberte, a 20 year old visitor from Massachusetts apologised to the court for bringing into the country 0.30 grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia on a cruise ship last Wednesday. Mr. Greaves did not fine her for the paraphernalia charges but ordered her to pay $500 or face 50 days in jail.

Robert Stell, a 36 year old New Yorker, who also arrived on a cruise ship, apologised to the court for possessing 0.79 grams of marijuana which he said was for personal use. He too was fined $500 as was Roy Calen Gustafson, a 49 year old Boston resident.
