Track club members shrug off rain in clean-up

A group of enthusiastic youngsters braved the pouring rain on Sunday afternoon during a fundraising trash clean-up.

The members of the Flyers Track Club chose Loyal Hill Community Park as the venue for the sponsored event, to raise cash for their travel to a track meet this July in Baltimore.

Steve Thomson, who organised the clean-up, said: "It's great for Bermuda to pick up trash ? and if you tell the kids to pick it up they sure won't throw it again. The weather was lousy but the kids made jokes about it and it was a pleasure seeing so many young Bermudians taking part."

Mr. Thomson said the volunteers found that 80 percent of the trash comprised of bottles, but they also found bike tyres and even a kitchen sink.

"Bermuda definitely needs a bottle bill like other places where you can take them back to the shop and get a refund," he commented.
