Trash problem is ?despicable?
Independent Senator has said Bermuda is suffering a from a ?despicable? trash problem.
Pointing out that the state of the environment in Bermuda had not been mentioned in the Throne Speech, she told the Senate she would have liked to see some solutions brought forward to clean up the accumulation of trash on the Island.
Sen. Bassett said trash-a-thons would be a good solution to get everyone involved in cleaning up the trash.
An avid runner, Sen. Bassett said that she regularly ran in the morning and decided to run past her former school recently when she noticed piles of trash just outside the schoolyard.
?What message are we sending our youth if they see this outside their school. When they are finished with their candy bar and they don?t know what to do with the paper is it surprising that they would toss it on the street if they see everyone else do it?? Sen. Bassett said.
Considering her interest in running, she thought a trash-a-thon would be a good way for people to become involved in cleaning up the Island rather than just a regular walk-a-thon that specifically gives to a cause.
She also said that Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB) had to be more than just a slogan and she questioned if Bermudians even cared about the state of their environment.
?We have to protect our environment,? she said.
