UK phone lines jammed as Bermudians try to contact friends, family
One of Bermuda?s long-distance providers reported a significant increase in traffic on the Bermuda-UK route in the wake of yesterday morning?s blasts in London.
The incidents put people into panic mode since news of the blasts ricocheted around the world, resulting in thousands of calls to the UK.
TeleBermuda International (TBI) spokesperson Angela Ambrosini said a bottleneck of calls was experienced in the morning ? but on the UK-side ? and there was very little that could be done about that.
?Even though there were a high number calls this morning, there were no customer issues locally. If there was to be any trouble in connectivity we would re-route the traffic to any one of our carriers,? she said.
Many Bermudians resorted to sending emails when they found they could not reach loved ones by phone and TBI reported an increase in Internet usage throughout the day.
Ms Ambrosini said the details on number of calls and the percentage increase in Internet activity would only be available sometime today.
Meanwhile Cable and Wireless did not report a significant increase in traffic this morning.
