Vacationers dig deep for possession

Eight cruise ship passengers were fined a total of $2,650 in Magistrates' Court yesterday for possession of cannabis.

Sean Delevan, of Middle Village, New Jersey was convicted and fined $400 for possessing 4.64 grams of cannabis. He said his assets were frozen in the United States and he would be forced to spend 40 days in jail.

"You found enough money to buy the cannabis," said Acting Senior Magistrate William Francis.

The 36-year-old Delevan explained that the trip was a gift and he had $289 left in his pocket. He was then dismissed.

Thirty five-year-old Christine Rosner of Kings Park, New York was fined $500 for importing cannabis and drug equipment on July 14. Nineteen-year-old Justin Alterio of Rutherford, New Jersey admitted bringing 3.88 grams of cannabis to Bermuda and received a $400 fine.

James Scott of Reinholds, Pennsylvania who turns 16 in May, said he had bought his cannabis from a man in St. George's square on July 14 and asked to be discharged. He was fined $200 for the 2.2 grams.

Forty-eight-year-old Albert Greco of New York City was fined $500 for 5.88 grams. Forty seven-year-old Donald Swatwood of Howard Beach, New York was also fined $500 for 4.38 grams and 22-year-old Brian Helgeson of Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey was fined $650 for 4.31 grams in Bermuda.
