Viagra covered but birth control pills aren't - MPYoung

An odd policy of Bermuda health insurers toward the reimbursement of pharmaceuticals was questioned yesterday by Opposition MP Kim Young.

Ms Young asked why the sexual stimulant Viagra is covered by local insurers while the birth control pill is not.

She said that a number of women had brought the lack of coverage for birth control pills to her attention.

"That doesn't make sense," Ms Young said.

Responding to Ms Young's point later in the debate, Health Minister Nelson Bascome (PLP) said the decision on whether to cover birth control belonged to the insurers.

"I would have to say that decision would not be made by the Minister," he said.

"It is one made by the insurance companies.

"While I say that I agree with (Ms Young's) point, it's one that needs to be made to those insurance companies."
