Police have arrested a suspected gunman involved in Sunday?s violent clashes at Wellington Oval, has learned.

And it is understood that at least one other man may have been armed with a gun during the bloody clash.

A dozen men have now been arrested in connection with the incident ? all of them from Paget.

Though Police spokesman Robin Simmons would not confirm the information about the gunmen last night, it is understood that Police identified one man holding a firearm through video footage of the incident.

Sources told , however, that the weapon had yet to be discovered.

It is understood that there are a large number of photos of the incident in Police possession, and suspects in those photos are beginning to turn themselves in.

Families have also been turning in hooligans in their midst following strong appeals from Police.

Acting Superintendent Stuart Crockwell, who is in charge of the investigation, said two men came in with their lawyers yesterday and gave themselves up at Hamilton Police Station.

?I think they realise the pressure is on and they are trying to avoid a crisis for their families,? said Acting Supt. Crockwell, who on Monday had issued an appeal for relatives to inform on offenders.

?I have had about three calls from family members saying they are going to assist Police by bringing in their people.

?I am taking a zero tolerance approach.

?I have search warrants to search houses and look for them.?

He said no one from Somerset had been arrested and all ten suspects still being sought by Police are from either Paget or Warwick.

Eyewitnesses told that street hangouts which normally see young men congregating were deserted yesterday.

A source said: ?Ord Road is like a ghost town. There?s nobody on Parson?s Road or on Somerset main road.?

Four of the suspects have been released from the investigation, others are on Police bail while five are still in custody. Not all suspects have been co-operative, with some exercising their right to silence.

No one has been charged yet although Police expect at least four of the suspects to go to court tomorrow.

In addition to the outraged relatives there have been plenty of anonymous tips, said Acting Supt. Crockwell.

A videotape of the incident taken by a member of the public had been a tremendous help in identifying likely offenders, he added.

Around 40 people battled with machetes, knives, swords, ice picks, sticks and concrete blocks. The violence put three people in hospital with one man suffering a stab wound just inches from his heart.

Police are still staying tight-lipped on whether gangs were to blame for the violence.

Numbers working on the case have been scaled back from 50 officers on Sunday and Monday to 15 as the Police Reserve unit had been stood down.

But the armed wing the Emergency Response Team is still on call for potentially dangerous search warrants.

And the PSU, acting on the warrants obtained by the SCU, are searching out the wanted men and arresting them at various locations across the Island.
