Volunteers keep tourists moving

Ordinary residents have come to the rescue of stranded visitors due to the taxi drivers? job action.

Former UBP MP Grace Bell has joined in with more than a dozen Islanders who are helping to transport passengers back and forth to the Airport and to their accommodation.

While reports surfaced this week of gypsy cab drivers gouging visitors with exorbitant fares, Mrs. Bell said the residents are regularly taking time out of their schedule to transport visitors who may have difficulty finding a taxi without charging for their services.

Mrs. Bell, who works part-time, said her volunteer driving has been a fantastic experience and has given tourists a positive picture of Bermuda despite the ongoing job action.

?They are saying how nice it is that someone will fill in and get them to their hotels in a timely manner,? said Mrs. Bell.

?It?s become a fantastic experience that so many residents are willing to put their affairs aside and assist visitors.?

Since last week she has been driving visitors across the Island and into Hamilton for dinner and to tourist attractions.
