More than 1,000 customers are set to benefit from cheaper water brought in by new water pipes that are being laid by Bermuda Waterworks Limited (BWL).

The new trenching programme will take place over a four-year period. Clients will pay around $25 for the equivalent of two truck loads of water, which currently cost around $60.

The trenching programme begins today on Point Finger Road and will spread all over the central parishes to the west of the Island.

BWL, president and chief executive officer, Allan Rance said: "I am very pleased to announce that BWL is set to embark on a trenching schedule that will extend the reach of our utility water supply across the Island. The four-year programme, which begins on Monday, will see almost 65,000 feet of trench dug and pipe laid in the City of Hamilton, Pembroke, Paget, Warwick and Southampton. It will take our water supply to more than a thousand potential clients.

"There has been a great deal of interest shown in our piped water service by home owners in these areas. We are encouraging them to sign on for our service now as it is going to be cheaper for us to provide them with connections while we are working in their area than if we have to return to connect them. at a later date."

BWL recently completed trenching work along Serpentine Road, Pitts Bay Road and St. Johns Road to the junction of North Shore Road.

After completion of the latest project the company will be taking its water supply to homes in Sunnyside Park and Horseshoe Road in Southampton.

Mr. Rance said: "The next four years will see our reach grow in what is our most ambitious trenching plan to date. This will allow us to provide more and more customers with a convenient, low cost supply of 100 percent potable water that can be accessed at any time. This will mean there is no reason for a homeowner to worry about running out of water or having to wait to fill up their tank."
