West End school says sports centre would be open to public
The West End may soon be home to a new public sports centre should an application before the Planning department be granted.
The Board of Governors of Sandys Secondary Middle School have submitted an application to demolish an existing cottage on the school property and re-align a car-park and sports field to allow for the construction of a new gymnasium, swimming pool with changing areas, and weights' and aerobics' rooms.
"It is also the school's intention that this facility will be available for use by the Western parishes' community," the school's agent, Colin Knight of Design Limited, wrote in letter to Planning to support the application.
A small existing cottage would be demolished to allow for the new facility, which would be 18,000 square feet on the ground floor with a 4,600 square-foot upper level.
According to the plans, the ground level would house the pool and changing areas, washrooms, gym stores and a reception while the upper level would house the aerobics suite, weight room, a juice bar and view gallery and lounge.
The application for final planning approval was submitted on April 18.
