Two businessmen are planning to re-open the landmark White Horse Tavern and restaurant in St. George's which has been closed since last year.

John Burcher, who managed the former Oasis night club in Hamilton, and Kevin Souza, have applied to have the licence for the King's Square property transferred to them.

The closure of the waterside bar and restaurant last year was seen as a severe blow to the economic vitality of the Old Town, particularly because it was situated on the square and was the first commercial building seen by cruise ship visitors calling in at Ordnance Island. The re-opening of the property will be a welcome boost to both locals and visitors.

Mr. Souza and Mr. Burcher have applied to the Liquor Licensing Authority to have the restaurant licence for the property transferred from former landlord Christopher West. The application will be heard at Magistrates Court on Friday.

Mr. Burcher said yesterday he could contact The Royal Gazette with details about his plans for the White Horse later in the day, but he did not return calls.
