A grateful chef who had his cash-stacked wallet returned to him after misplacing it finally met the student saviour who had carried out the good deed this week.

Raj Natarajan, a chef who worked at House of India restaurant, unknowlingly dropped his wallet which contained more than $1,200 in cash and a blank cheque when he picked up his daughter from Francis Patton school last Wednesday.

Charkayla Hughes, daughter of Bermuda College student Dwaynette Hughes discovered the wallet on the ground as she left the school with her mother.

“ I saw it on the ground and I picked it up and gave it to my momma,” Charkayla said.

And Ms Hughes, a mother of four girls studying child psychology full-time at the Bermuda College, said she never had a moments hesitation about returning the wallet.

Asked if the funds would have not come in handy for her own needs she said it had never entered her mind. “That's just not my nature,” she said. “Not even for a second did it cross my mind to keep it.”

Mr. Natarajan actually received his wallet with all the contents intact, days before he was able to meet Ms Hughes. He had also called our newsroom with the story before he had met her.

On Tuesday he explained that he felt strongly that her good actions should get attention.

“Good things should not go unnoticed,” he said. “The people of Bermuda should be proud to have such people among them. By her actions people the whole world over have learned that Bermudians are lovely and nice.”

Ms Hughes had found a blank cheque from House of India restaurant in the wallet and so figuring she would be able to place it directly into Mr. Natarajan's hand, she went to the Parsons Road establishment. Once there however, she learned that he had changed jobs but the owner, Geraldine Rodriquez assured that she could return it and so Ms Hughes left the wallet in her charge.

So impressed with her honesty Ms Rodriquez has given a $50 gift voucher to her restaurant to Ms Hughes and Mr. Natarajan also gave the family of a five a gift certificate to another restaurant.

All smiles when they came to speak with us, Ms Hughes, her daughters and Mr. Natarajan all said the act has left them with a good feeling.

“I feel happy . I knew it would make someone happy,” Charkayla said about returning the wallet.
