A teenager has accused Police of failing to investigate her claims that she was beaten up.

Rebecca Lovell Grant says she was attacked by an angry father and daughter as she stood at a bus stop early one morning.

She claims the attack early last December left her with a bust lip and scratches about her face, neck and ears.

The 19-year-old says her mother took her to the family doctor and then to Somerset Police Station so that she could file a report. But to her surprise she said the officer refused to take a statement, telling her she needed to get the names of her attackers.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said he could not comment on the particulars of any case and added that the Police Service takes "all crimes committed against anyone seriously".

Ms Lovell Grant said she had to go the Somerset station twice more before an officer would take her statement.

"I went back twice. The next day and the day after that.

"Everyone said I had to go when the man I saw the first time was on a different shift.

"Eventually I got them to take a statement but the wounds had started to heal up by then ? all I had was the doctor's report of what happened," she said.

According to Ms Lovell Grant, the assault occurred after she asked a 12-year-old girl who had been picking on her younger sister to stop.

"I was standing at the bus stop and I recognised the little girl so I told her she should stop picking on my sister and that if she did not like her she should just leave her alone and not talk to her."

She said the young girl's father overheard the conversation and reprimanded her, telling her that she should not tell his daughter what to do.

She said she then tried to explain to him that her younger sister was being picked on, when his older daughter overheard their conversation and took issue with the way she was talking to him.

She said the older daughter butted in, slapping her face so she pushed her away but this resulted in both the daughter and father beating up on her.

"My mouth was busted open there were abrasions in my mouth, around my neck and scratches all around my ears," she said.

Ms Grant Lovell said people in her neighbourhood encouraged her to report the incident.

"People were saying 'He's a grown man, you should report it to Police' and I know one person who said they would support me because he had come to their home and threatened them with a machete," she said.

But besides taking her statement, Ms Grant Lovell said Police have failed to take any further action on the matter.

"They had arranged for a meeting with the three of us but he (the accused) never showed up and they (the Police) haven't done anything else," she said.

Asked what she wants to happen, Ms Grant Lovell said: "I want to see it go to court. Look what happened to that woman who got slashed.

"I think it starts little and if they don't stop it when it starts little then they are waiting until someone gets really hurt or killed.

"I feel it's ridiculous. I'm becoming a young lady and I know young ladies shouldn't fight.

"It's street to fight so I tried to do the right thing but it hasn't worked. When I told him (Police) what happened he said that I was lying.

"That hurt especially because he was a foreigner and he wasn't paying attention.

"He was doodling when I was explaining what happened."
