Sacked ProActive workers will meet at the Bermuda Industrial Union this morning to hear the latest on moves to get pay owed after Government booted the company off the Berkeley school site.

BIU president Derrick Burgess said workers are set to be told when money will be made available at the nine a.m. meeting today. He said: ?We have been working in the last couple of days to get these workers paid for the work they have done and also severance pay and pay in lieu of notice. We can report that some workers will be paid tomorrow for the work they have done.?

He said the contract stipulated severance pay of two weeks for each year of service and a month?s pay in lieu of notice. Work on the site started in 2001. ?We expect that to be honoured. They were fired by Government,? said Mr. Burgess. ?I don?t want to prejudice anything at this point, talks are still going on.?

He said workers had been shocked to find out they had been sacked through the news. The union is pressing the case of the 60-plus workers to be given jobs on the site with the new contractor. ?The ministry has asked for names and their trades. ?It?s my hope that these same workers will be re-employed on that site,? said Mr. Burgess who said he was shocked by the situation.
