Saturday's horse show for the disabled had at times a touch of the Olympics about it.

The riders performed a dressage test, involving a sequence of movements which two of them will be displaying in the Para Olympics.

And on hand to help was Alexander Mitchell who competed in the Sydney Olympics for Bermuda in dressage.

Organisers hailed the Bermuda Riding for the Disabled Annual Horse Show and Open House a great success.

Some 28 riders took part in the event at the Windreach Recreational Village, and there were 45 volunteers. Refreshments were provided by Marsha Simas, while there were games and donations from all sectors of the community.

Among those who came out to show support were MPs Nelson Bascome, Randy Horton, Michael Dunkley and Cole Simons.

"It was wonderful to see the seats full of so many smiling faces," said Louise Cook, Manager of BRD.

Volunteer Gill Hallard said that after a few expected nerves, the riders soon blossomed when they saw the enthusiasm of the crowds. A mark of the event's success came in a letter of thanks from the Gilbert Institute students in Primary 4. It was sent to Sally Clinton who sponsored their classmate Jaime Brangman - a sufferer of cerebral palsy through Support a Child Campaign. The Bermuda Riding for the Disabled has been in operation since 1973 and provides a riding therapy programme for 65 riders from 23 schools.

The BRD is based at Windreach Recreational Village, but is a self-funding charity that depends solely on donations made directly to them.

BRD will also be holding the annual major fundraising event "Denim and Diamonds" on May 11. Tickets are $100 each. In the main arena under the big tent there will be dinner, dancing, a silent auction and great raffle prizes.
