An 18-year-old Pembroke man allegedly seen carrying a machete during a gang fight which disrupted a football match last month handed himself in to Police yesterday.

The youth surrendered to Hamilton Police Station and is being questioned by detectives.

Television cameras broadcast disturbing pictures of hooligans armed with knives, a baseball bat and a machete chasing another group of youths at Devonshire Recreation Club last month which stopped a game between Devonshire Colts and Devonshire Cougars.

Police yesterday urged others involved in the violence, whether they are victims or among the aggressors, to come forward.

The violence, which left spectators terrified, led to an emergency meeting of Bermuda Football Association (BFA).

One youth seen in the footage was understood to be a registered footballer and BFA was preparing to ban him from all grounds when he was properly identified.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said yesterday: "An 18-year-old youth turned himself in today and is helping Police with enquiries.

"We would like to thank BBC for broadcasting their footage and to thank the individuals who called CrimeStoppers to assist us.

"This is a further example of a partnership with the community to help deal with an outstanding issue.

"We are also urging the other young men in the footage, whether they are the perpetrators or the individuals fleeing, to turn themselves in and help Police with their investigations."
