Baby cribs warning

Government's Consumer Affairs Office (CAO) has advised the recall of at least five models of baby cribs sold in Bermuda, after the deaths of two infants in the United States.

The move comes after the Consumer Product Safety Commission in America (CPSC) announced the voluntary recall of about one million cribs under the 'Simplicity' brand name.

Apparently, the crib's drop-side can detach from the hardware, which can create a dangerous gap, leading to the entrapment and suffocation of infants — the cause of death for a nine-month-old and a six-month-old. Made in China and sold in stores between January 1998 and May 2007, the drop-side failures result from both the hardware and crib design, which allows consumers to unintentionally install the drop-side hardware upside down.

The cribs include Simplicity crib models: Aspen three-in-one, Aspen four-in-one, Nursery-in-a-box, Rib n Changer Combo, Chelsea and Pooh four-in-one.

This also extends to Simplicity cribs that used the Graco logo: Aspen three-in-one, Ultra three-in-one, Ultra four-in-one, Ultra five-in-one and Whitney and the Trio. The following model numbers can be found on the recalled contraptions: 4600, 4605, 4705, 5000, 8000, 8740, 8910, 8994, 8050, 8760 and 8996. These numbers can be found on the envelope attached to the mattress support and on the label attached to the headboard.

CAO said last night that it had contacted the major baby furniture retailers on the Island, advising them of the recall.

After an inspection of the inventory for the relating products, the cribs affected have been removed from store shelves.

As a precaution, people who do have any of the affected models that were purchased locally should call their retailer so that a repair kit can be ordered.
