UBP welcomes Bazarian announcement

United Bermuda Party Leader Kim Swan has welcomed news the Club Med site is to be redeveloped.

Last week Premier Ewart Brown announced a Master Development Agreement had been signed with Bazarian International to turn the former Club Med site into a luxury Park Hyatt hotel with a signature golf course designed by Nick Faldo.

Mr. Swan said: "We know from our years in Government how challenging it is to get redevelopment of the site off the ground.

"While we wish the developer the best in this undertaking, (this week's) announcement will likely strike many St. Georgians as something they've heard too often in the past with no result.

"We hope things will be different this time around, but clearly the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. "(The) announcement gives reason to be cautiously optimistic."

The site, which has hit the headlines in recent weeks after eight workers were exposed to asbestos during demolition, has been empty for 20 years.

Teacher's arbitration hearings begin

An arbitration hearing yesterday opened over a pay dispute between Bermuda Public Services Union and Government.

BPSU opted for the voluntary move after previously threatening to "close down the whole Island" with a strike.

In February, the usually non-confrontational union said frustration among members had boiled over after their attempts to force a meeting with Premier Ewart Brown and Finance Minister Paula Cox failed. They were unhappy at being offered a four percent pay increase for two years, and 4.5 percent for a third year, subtracting one percent for pensions.

Members, many of whom claim they have to work an additional job to make ends meet, want 5.1 percent to take into account cost of living. The hearing began yesterday at Richmond House, in Par-la-Ville Road.
