The court had heard how Percy Louis Junior Smith, 40, was stopped by Police as he rode his motorcycle on Curving Avenue, Pembroke, at 11.20 p.m. on September 30 last year.

According to Crown counsel Cindy Clarke, the officers — who had stopped Smith on another matter — detected the smell of marijuana on his breath.

They searched him and found the cannabis twist, containing 0.55 g of the drug, in the pocket of his pants.

Smith pleaded guilty to possession of the drug when he appeared at Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Ms Clarke said he had previous convictions for this type of offence, but they are approximately ten years old.

The defendant disputed the Police version of events, telling Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo he had voluntarily taken the package out of his pants pocket.

As well as fining Smith for the drug possession, Mr. Tokunbo also ordered him to pay a $250 outstanding fine for having an unlicensed motor bike.
