Gombey troupe to perform in New York
The Warwick Gombey Troupe is set to perform in New York City during the sixth annual Drums Along the Hudson, a multi-cultural festival.
The event, which will be held in Upper Manhattan's Inwood Hill Park on May 3, attracted around 6,000 spectators last year.
Irwin Trott founded the Warwick Gombey Troupe in 1996 with a mission to spread Bermuda's culture throughout the world with indigenous music and dance.
It currently has 25 members, of which ten dancers and five drummers will make the journey to New York.
"This will be the first time for us at this event. It is a great honour for us and we are so proud to represent the Island of Bermuda," said Mr. Trott.
Bermuda's St. David's Islanders Indian Committee will also perform at Drums Along the Hudson.
It will be the first time at the event for the St. David's Islanders as well. The six performers will be led by St. Clair "Brinky" Tucker.
According to a press statement from the office of Premier and Minister of Tourism Ewart Brown, both groups will receive logistical support from Bermuda Department of Tourism representatives based in New York.
Dr. Brown said: "I'm thrilled that these talented dance troupes will be performing along the Hudson.
"They are fantastic ambassadors for Bermuda and it doesn't hurt that they'll be dancing in New York, the heart of our biggest tourism market."
The Warwick Gombeys will also perform at the prestigious Dance Theatre of Harlem while in New York.
