Killer lunges and lasagne

In week three she's got a new exercise routine and finds herself re-energised for the Live Healthy Bermuda 100 Day Challenge even as Jennifer Hume, one of The Royal Gazette's columnists slips when confronted with a birthday cake.

Jennifer's Diary:

Thursday, January 29: I'm getting a lot of positive responses to the newspaper articles and everyone wants to know how I'm doing. Around the end of week two I hopped on the scale at the veterinary clinic.

It said I had gained six pounds. I haven't set foot on a scale since. I don't want to depress myself into giving up so I'm going to keep on trucking and concentrate on the long term healthy changes I'm trying to make and not focus on a number.

Friday, February 1: My boyfriend and I have continued going out for our usual Friday night dinners. The maître d's at our favourite restaurant keep expressing surprise when we show up.

They said after seeing me in the newspaper they were sure they had lost me at least while the Challenge was on. They wished me luck and gave me extra spinach with my fish.

Saturday, February 2: The diet went completely out the window tonight. It's my mom's birthday tomorrow so we had a surprise party tonight for her. The surprise went off perfectly, mom was really pleased and I stuffed myself silly.

I've been trying to go easy on the pasta intake. I've been doing well but I caved tonight when I was faced with some gorgeous lasagne. And then I caved again when the strawberry shortcake was presented.

It all tasted fantastic but I felt awful afterwards — overstuffed and uncomfortable. I need to hold on to the memory of that feeling for when I'm tempted again.

Monday, February 4: I was so not in the mood for the gym today and spent the afternoon coming up with excuses to skip it. Then my superfit, marathon running friend, Melissa, called and reminded me that we were supposed to start our Monday night fitness sessions.

It was a gorgeous evening so we did a speed walk along Shelley Bay stretch. Melissa skipped along wearing a weight vest. I was my usual red-faced self, puffing along behind her.

After that we went back to her house and did lunges and crunches and jumped rope around her back yard. It was a far better workout than I would have given myself at the gym although I know I'm going to feel it tomorrow.

Tuesday, February 5: My butt hurts. Those lunges are a killer.
