Lineup for Livin' the Rhythm 2008 finalised
Drumming sensations are set to hit Bermuda with another lively performance on Saturday, May 24, at 7 p.m.
The Ministry of Culture and Social Rehabilitation has formed a partnership with Yhoshi Productions to launch the Bermuda Day weekend festivities in spectacular fashion with: Bermuda: Livin' the Rhythm 2008.
"This will certainly be one of the highlights of this year's Heritage Month in May," Minister Butler said at a press conference announcing the performance on Thursday.
"This event is designed to entertain a multi-generational audience, in keeping with the aims of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, the family is seen as the focus for this uplifting cultural event."
Nearly 400 international performers will descend upon the National Stadium to showcase some of America's most formidable Marching Bands with tight choreography, musicianship and precision drumming.
After a hugely successful event three years ago, which drew over 10,000 thrilled spectators, Yhoshi Productions has responded to the public's demand for more.
The historic Howard University Marching Band will attend along with the renowned Brooklyn Steppers, who will be performing with Virginia's award-winning Milford High band.
In celebration of this year's theme for Heritage Month, Life In Old Bermuda, there will also be performances by: the Bermuda Regiment Band led by director of music Captain D. Robinson; a parade of majorettes drawn from various local troupes such as Pembroke Community Club (PCC), Boulevard Blazerettes, Warwick United, Pembroke Hamilton Club (PHC) and the Prospect twirlers; the Youth Drum Corps led by Gombey veteran Dennis Parsons; and, a surprise international performance by a Youtube teen dancing sensation.
The Master of Ceremonies for the evening, the legendary DJ Youngals will be joined by comedian and DJ Double S to host.
Additionally, there will be an educational component for many of the Island's schools. On Friday, May 23, the Brooklyn Steppers, a performance band of youth between the ages of 11 and 18, will give a free performance and inspirational presentation at the Berkeley Institute, while The Howard University Marching Band will likewise inspire the students at CedarBridge Academy.
The Howard University Band travels extensively throughout the year, showcasing their wild and funky take on the traditional marching band style.
The Brooklyn Steppers is a richly talented group of dancers, drummers and performers that hails from the neighbourhoods of Brooklyn, New York.
Highly sought after, they have performed for the New Jersey Nets, at the NBA All-Star's event in Las Vegas, and most recently for the victorious New York Giants.
Milford Mill Academy Spartan Band is one of the top groups on the east coast who have received numerous accolades of the past 15 years.
Starting in 1993 with only thirty-three members, the Spartan band has grown to over 180 members.
"We are very very happy with the really strong line up," said organiser David Durham of Yhoshi. "The Brooklyn Steppers, (for example) will bring a true strong performance as they have in the past when they performed at the Super Bowl's half time show.
"There will be four 12-foot screens around the stadium, this will be an event that the whole family will not want to miss."
Minister Butler would like to remind the public that this is an advance ticket-only event.
No one will be allowed to pay at the gate, as this year's performance will only allow for 5,000 spectators.
"This will be the last time to see Drumline in Bermuda, at least for the next three to four years, so get your ticket early, as we will not be able to squeeze people in like we did last time."
Tickets will go on sale April 25 at various locations including all Esso Tiger Marts.
Interested persons can get more information from their Facebook page: Bermuda Drumline.
Deadline for vendors is April 30 and applications are available at Yhoshi Productions 292-0282.
